It's never enough

We had plans to do something fun yesterday to celebrate the last day of winter break. Unfortunately our plans did not take into account that the stomach flu would be visiting our family. Caroline was sick Friday/Saturday, Alex Sunday/Monday and Matt and I got it today. Alex got it really bad--we ended up taking him to the doctor and she started talking about dehydration and iv fluids (luckily some anti nausea meds worked and we didn't have to go there). However, I wasn't about to take him anywhere (even if he would wake up long enough to go somewhere) so the other kids were sad that we just had to sit around on their last day of vacation.

I tried to put it in perspective--Look at all the fun things we did the last 2 weeks:
  • Visit Grandma and Grandpa, Alyssa and Lexie in Augusta for 3 days
  • Christmas parties galore
  • Multiple play dates with friends and cousins
  • Several times we ate at restaurants
  • A Fun New Years Eve party with their favorite foods
  • Do I need to mention Christmas?? (with all the accompanying gifts)
But all that in 14 days was not enough to make up for the last day of sitting at home (not like I really had a choice, but it was my fault, apparently).

I hate the pressure that school vacations give me--my kids expect something fabulous EACH.AND.EVERY day they are home from school. I try to tell them that life can't be fun and exciting every day but they think it is just me--and tell me about all the trips their friends are going on. Somehow I have a feeling that if I planned a 2 week trip to Disney World and we came back 2 days before school started, the next morning the kids would wake up and ask what we were going to do because their vacation had been boring!

I totally hear you. That's when I decide to take it to the extreme and give them chores to do--you know--if they are determined to be miserable anyway ;)

Plan for spring break- do absolutely nothing until the last day, and see if they like that better. :)

Yes, this is the unfortunate problem of today. Do you know there is such a thing called Free Range Children. Basically, it is a philosophy of trying to get children back to life as we knew it of being able to run around free. Good luck with Spring Break!
