I started my 40 bags in 40 days challenge on March 9th. On April 10th--Day 33, I took my final load of items to donate to North Fulton Community Charities. ( I do still have a table and chairs that is waiting to be donated/given away because I need a truck to move it--but it is not counted in my tally below)
My final totals were:
Bags Donated/Sold/Given Away: 31
Bags of Trash: 16
Total: 47 bags
I also earned $45 on selling items, as well as keeping a list of everything I donated (along with donations receipts) that I can use for deductions on our taxes next year.
The only areas of the house that I didn't get to were:
- My computer desk--at least several bags of trash there, but I put it off to the end because it scared me!
- Matt's desk in the office--he has tons of papers there, but some of them likely need to be shredded for work reasons so I couldn't touch any of that.
- Caroline's room--I would love to clean out her room, but it is her stuff, not mine so I left it alone
It was overwhelming when I first started thinking about it, but it went faster than I thought. Every day I would just think of one small area that I could work on that I could get a bag of trash from. Even the big areas went faster than expected--often I would work from about 1:30-2:30 (a time I am always home as I get ready for the older kids to get home), usually I would go online during that hour or just relax, but I took a garbage sack or two and tried to find an area that needed cleaning. Often I was done well before the bus came. Even the big areas--our guest room, or the storage room in the basement, didn't take longer then 3-4 hours of work.
I'm officially done...though I may try to tackle my computer desk once I can
