Spring Break in Utah--Day 5 Sweet's Candy Factory

After the Dinosaur Museum, I drove back to the hotel to get Matt--he had worked all night and slept while we were at the museum.

After picking him up we got lunch at In-N-Out Burger.  Neither Matt nor I had been there before and we had heard how incredible it was.  After eating there I can say it was.....fine.  Definitely not the best hamburger I've ever had, but it tasted good.  The fries were only so-so.  I would go there again, but maybe I had heard too much about how great it was--I don't know that it could have lived up to all the hype!

After getting lunch to go, we drove to Salt Lake and met half the group at Sweet's Candy Factory for a tour (the others went to Park City).

My kids love this type of thing--they love seeing how things are made.  When we went to Hershey a couple of years ago, they loved the chocolate factory tour (and that wasn't the real factory).  I love taking them on tours to see how things work or how they are made.  The candy factory was really fun and interesting.
Everyone had to wear a hairnet--but Aaron was the only one that would put it back on for a picture (Carter and Alex wouldn't even pose for the picture).  We learned a couple of neat things--like the molds they use for all their gummy products are made out of cornstarch--they press the cornstarch into a mold and super compress it.  Then they remove it and use it as a mold for the gummy candy.  The lady said they haven't found a food grade plastic that won't stick to the gummy candy but the cornstarch they just shake off and recycle it to use again.   They also said they sell any of their chocolate that is ruined or that they can't use to farmers in Idaho who put the chocolate on hay for the cows!  We also saw a 100lb roll of taffy (Neapolitan) that they put into a wrapping machine and from this huge roll of taffy came out all these perfectly wrapped pieces of taffy that you would buy at the store--still can't figure out how that worked.
I love these two pictures of Aaron--he is holding up some taffy that we got at the gift shop.

Caroline, some taffy and a little candy jar and scoop that she got.
