Loud noises have always terrified my kids. Until last year, Caroline was so afraid of a popping balloon, that she couldn't even be in the same room with balloons. Fireworks are a nightmare, and, of course, thunderstorms are high on the "terrify us" list.
Obviously some things are easier to avoid than others-- Thunderstorms are especially hard to avoid--and we seem to get a lot of them.
A few weeks go we were at the Y for one of Caroline's rock climbing classes. There was a lot of thunder and I didn't really think much of it--until I went to pick up Carter and Alex from the childcare. Carter mentioned the thunder and said they had told him it was just Angels Bowling and that wasn't scary at all. I've told him similar things, but this seemed to work so I was happy and didn't think much of it
Until....
About a week later we had more thunder and Carter started talking more about the thunder while he was at the Y. To set the stage, in the evenings there aren't a ton of kids there so they combine the ages-- infant through 5 years old (obviously the babies are separated within the same room).
Carter said that when the thunder first started he stood up in the middle of the room and yelled "THUNDER!!! RUN FOR YOUR LIVES!!!!!" Then he said they talked to him about it just being angels bowling and he didn't need to worry about it.
I about died laughing at the thought of all these little kids, already nervous or scared by the thunder and being away from their parents, and Carter standing up and yelling for them to run for their lives.....I felt so sorry for the people working there, trying to calm all those kids....but I still have to laugh every time I think of it. Carter cracks me up.
