A glimpse

Most of the time I can only see my failings as a mom--the lessons I forget to teach, the fighting, the whining, the way other moms handle things so much better, the things I do that I later regret, etc.

Every once in a while, I get a glimpse that I'm doing something right....

Earlier today Caroline asked me if she could bring a few copies of the friend magazine (a church magazine for kids) to school to show someone. I said sure.

On the way home from Karate, Caroline said that for the next Family Home Evening lesson she would like a lesson on how to answer questions that people ask them about the church. I said sure and asked who is asking about church. This is how the rest of the conversation went:

Caroline:
A girl on our bus was talking with Carter and I about Yom Kippur and asked if we were Jewish. I told her no, and said that we were Mormon. She told me that she was Mormon too, but I told her she probably wasn't.

I told her that she was probably Christian and she said she was. She asked me if I had been baptized and I told her I was. I then told Carter to tell her the 2nd Article of Faith because that was the one that best fit with not getting baptized as a baby--was I right?

Me: (amazed)...yes Caroline, That was perfect.

Carter: recites the 2nd article of faith

Caroline: Then that lead directly into the 4th Article of Faith--where it talks about baptism and the Gift of the Holy Ghost. So I had Carter say the 4th Article of Faith.

Carter: recites the 4th article of faith

Caroline: So I was hoping that you could give us some more help on things we could tell her and how to answer other questions that she has.

At night before we go to bed the kids work on memorizing the Articles of Faith. Caroline has memorized them all a few years ago, but is working on them again with Carter. We only have #10 and half of #13 to go before they have memorized all of them. Some nights I am tired and the kids are complaining and I question why I don't just put them to bed.

But sometimes I get a glimpse that I'm doing at least one or two things right.

No, you should be really proud. Her testimony on Sunday blew me away. You have done a good job!

What an amazing story. I am so proud that Carter can recite the Articles of Faith, and I am even more impressed that Caroline knows how to apply them and can use them the way they are intended. You are a great mother!
