Spring Break in Utah--Day 2--Church History Museum

The next morning we set out to see the sites in downtown Salt Lake.  We started the morning at the Church History Museum.   We had heard about a really fun children's exhibit, but we started out looking at the regular museum.
It was very interesting to see the history of the trek to Utah.  I really liked the area depicting life on a ship since that is the way most of my relatives arrived.  Caroline and Carter climbed on this reproduction of a ship's bunk.
I'm always amazed at how small the handcarts were--I honestly can't imagine fitting everything we need (including food) for a new life in one (or even two) of these.  I think we packed more for our one week trip here.
This is a pulpit that was formerly used in the tabernacle.  It still had the teleprompter window in it and the kids loved standing behind it pretending to give a talk.  What you don't see is me kneeling down behind the podium to lift the kids up enough so they can see over the top.....though I think the pictures would have been so much better with a white shirt and tie for the boys.
(in case you are wondering, the sign says "Please feel free to stand behind the podium for pictures"
We all loved this replica of the Angel Moroni statue that is on top of all of the LDS temples.  There wasn't anything around it to tell if that is the size of all the Angel Moroni statues or not...but I think it probably is.  The artistry/detail is amazing.
There was an amazing display of quilts at the museum.  A few of the quilts had recordings telling about the story of the quilt.  When I see those types of quilts I realize that I really can't call myself a quilter.  At the end of the quilt display there was a magnetic board with quilt block pieces (magnets) that you could design your own quilt block with.

After the quilt block display was the are the kids were waiting for the most.  The interactive display on the Book of Mormon.
This area reminded me of a movie we used to see at the North Visitors Center at Temple Square.  It was a video on family home evening and the people in the different windows would talk to each other.  That was my favorite thing at temple square when I was growing up.
They had a lot of fun dresses (and vests for boys) to wear and then there were two monitors that would teach you the steps to two different dances.

I thought this was was fun--to copy characters that were found on the plates.  I don't know what the material was that you wrote on, like a reverse chalk board or something--it was pretty cool.
The boys loved the building blocks.  Unfortunately we experienced a number of earthquakes and nothing lasted very long.  I don't think they name the earthquakes, but if they did they would have started with the letters C and A.

Caroline crossing the ocean on Nephi's ship.  It was a cute ship with fishing poles and velcro fish for you to catch over the edge.

I went there the week before it opened with my kids. The guy that designed it was kind enough to give us a sneak peek. That is all he does for a living. Really nice guy. I can't wait to take them again for real. It was fun, even though we didn't get to play with everything.
