Nearly a year ago we planned a trip to Utah to see my Grandma for her 80th birthday. My entire family was able to go (except for Lisa, Adam and Ellie who had to miss because of cute little baby that joined their family a week before we left).
I wasn't looking forward to flying with 4 kids, especially when I realized that we would all be taking a carry on suitcase and a backpack--how I miss the days of checking baggage!
There were some highlights to the very long day of flying, layovers, waiting, and more waiting (Aaron and I had a different connecting flight than Matt and the other 3 kids--luckily we were able to be on the same flight on all the other segments of the trip).
First was at security. Try to picture 4 kids and 2 adults trying to navigate security--taking shoes off, getting laptops (2) out of bags, pulling out the liquids, getting all 11 bags through the x-ray machines, Matt getting picked to have the full body scan (of course), getting all the bags off the x-ray machines, putting everything back into the suitcases, shoes back on the kids (making sure a couple of the kids didn't wander off)...it was either a nightmare, or pretty comical--depending on if you were involved or just watching it as a side show. The funniest part was when we were taking off shoes and getting everything put on the x-ray machines. I looked back at Alex and not only had he taken off his shoes and his shirt but I could see he was about to reach for his pants. Luckily I stopped it before it got really embarrassing and we settled for just the shoes.
Then there was Aaron. When he saw that we had rolling suitcases he would not be happy until he got to pull his own suitcase through the airport. Granted, it was a little rolling suitcase, but he pulled it all through the Atlanta airport, to Matt and the kids' connecting gate in Dallas, then to our gate after their flight left, then, in Salt Lake, he pulled it to baggage claim where we met up with Matt and the kids. Wherever he walked he got a lot of smiles and nice comments--it was pretty cute to see him so seriously intent on pulling that suitcase.
We finally all made it to Salt Lake and were happy it was only a 10 minute drive to our hotel in downtown. We checked in and then went to dinner at The Old Spaghetti Factory...you can tell we were desperate for a restaurant because my kids don't like pasta...or anything with a red sauce....eating there after spending all day flying was, as you can imagine, something I won't forget anytime soon.
