One thing I've been wanting to do since Caroline was little was go to the Wild Animal Safari. I'm glad I waited until now, because the kids were old enough to have a great time, and old enough to remember it so we don't have to go again for a very long time!
The Wild Animal Safari is a huge open area filled with all types of animals--buffalo, zebras, ostriches, pigs, deer, giraffes, etc. A few key animals were kept in cages--the lions and camels, thank goodness! You drove though the "park" throwing food pellets to the animals. They warned you not to hand feed them, and we had no problem with not doing that--though many people we saw did do it (yuck)!
We were planning on taking the bus, but it had just left and it would be 90 min wait for the next one. Our other options were to drive our own car or rent a van...no question (especially after seeing the condition of the vans)!
The van we rented had almost no brakes, no acceleration, bars in the windows (to keep the animals out), and to tell you how old it really was....
I'm trying to remember how many years ago it was that they still put ashtrays in the back of the seats!
We were told by others to get there first thing in the morning--when the animals were hungry....I could see after hours of people throwing food at them the animals might get tired and not want to come eat!
This is when we were sure that we had made the right decision about renting the van!
Aaron kept saying "Eat that you" and throwing the food out the window
It was a little too up close and personal for Carter and Alex and about halfway through they went to the front passenger seat (where the window wouldn't roll down)!
Carter and Caroline liked this one because it has the letter "C" on it.
I saw more tongue close ups than I ever really wanted to!
Ellie demonstrating how it looks when they stick their tongue out.
Ellie was cuter!
Caroline in her tour guide position! (Carter and Alex in the front)
After the drive through area we washed our hands (a couple of times) and then ate a picnic lunch. After lunch we went to the walk through area.
There were turtles, goats, ligers, birds, chimps, reptile house, peacocks, kangaroos, and hyenas (just as creepy in real life as they are in the Lion King!)
On the way out we had to get a picture at every.single. wooden photo spot...because they make such great pictures.
Carter was mad, but it actually fits, because if you have that snake wrapped around you I doubt you would be smiling!
We "bear-ly" made it out of there! It was fun and the kids liked it but once was enough for a long time!
