Our elementary school has a reading program called AR. Kids from 1st-5th can earn points by reading books and then taking comprehension tests on the books. Points are given depending on the difficulty of the book--anywhere from 1/2 point for picture books to 45 points for some of the longer Harry Potter books. Throughout the year the kids read books, take tests and are given prizes when they reach certain levels. Mid-April the program ends and kids who have earned a certain number of points are deemed "All-Stars" and get to go to a special breakfast and get a trophy. Alex had to earn 70 points--most of his books are 1/2 to 1 point each. Carter had to earn 120 points--most of his books are 2-3 points each. By the first of December neither of them had earned very many points, but they suddenly decided they wanted to be All-Stars this year. So we worked hard--really hard reading and driving them to school early and writing down books and finding books and they did it--they both earned their All Star points by the end of February. Carter sometimes had 10 books a week to take tests on, and one week he took tests on 18 books! I was so proud of them, and they were so happy to be able to go to the breakfast!
They sat by grade level at the tables--Alex was the only one from his class.
