BYU and Georgia Tech have rarely played each other. The last time they played in Atlanta, our family looked like this:
Grandma Urbanawiz made Caroline this cute little cheerleader outfit--since she was half BYU (Melinda's alma matter) and half Georgia Tech (Matt's alma matter). Not too many people realized it was half BYU--since Georgia Tech's colors are Gold and White with Navy as the accent color...but the game was fun. Tech won that match up. We were planning on going to the game in Provo (Matt's dream is to sit in the visitor's section at Cougar Stadium and cheer for Tech!), unfortunately it was the same weekend that I was due with Carter and it didn't look like I would be able to make the game (or the flight!) at the stage of pregnancy called "it could be any minute now". I offered to let Matt go to the game, but in an act of true fatherly love he decided to stay for Carter's birth and miss the game!
It took 10 years but they finally played again in Atlanta in 2012
This is how our family looked for the game. I made Caroline a new cheerleader outfit that was half BYU and half Georgia Tech. Carter and Alex had BYU shirts and Georgia Tech pants. Aaron only wanted Georgia Tech (he had the choice).
We had SO many comments on Caroline's outfit. A number of people asked us if we had bought it--like the BYU/GT rivalry is so big that they would sell this type of thing! It was fun talking to people at the game.
We walked around campus a bit before getting to the stadium.
The kids had such a good time at the game. At one point Alex, Carter, Aaron and I were waiting in line for concessions and a man asked if we were from Utah. I explained about the BYU/Tech connection and told him that the boys were wearing half and half. He said that was ok, but not as good as just GT clothing. Aaron piped right up and said that he was only wearing GT clothes and the man said he loved it and would buy him something from the concessions. Aaron didn't even spare a second glance at me as he walked right up to the man. (So much for my talks on not taking candy from strangers!)
We went to a pregame party at the Castleton's house and they had lots of temporary tattoos for the kids--Alex took advantage!
It did start getting pretty cold at the end of the came, and great mom that I am, I forgot all the jackets and the kids were only wearing short sleeves...oops. Luckily we huddled for warmth and the kids shared jackets with my mom and dad. We made it through the game, just a little colder than we would have liked!
We went with the Lichfields and my parents and our friends the Andersons. They also gave an award to a Tech Professor that happens to be in our ward and the golf team received awards from their coach (also in our ward). It was Mormon day at the football game!
This was toward the end of the game...All those empty seats were filled with Tech fans at the beginning of the game--the BYU fans were still packed in, but the Tech fans had left--it was a pretty miserable game for them!
Final Score: BYU 41 GT 17. We are already making plans to fly out to Utah next year for the game in Provo!
