Cloudland Canyon--Thursday

I'm late in getting this posted, but I wanted to write about what we did and I have a bunch of pictures to post, so I'm going to break it up by day so the posts won't get too long!

Jennifer flew out from Oregon for a week, so in March we planned a family trip to Cloudland Canyon in the Northwest Georgia Mountains.

Thursday was mostly spent getting everything ready to leave. I had a room parent meeting for Caroline's school that morning and then had to rush to do all the things I had put off doing the week before.

Our hope was to leave about 10/11....we left at 2. We still hadn't eaten lunch so we had to stop to get something for lunch...then stop to get gas....then stop to use the bathroom (again)...then stop to clean up a spill....then finally we were on our way!

The actual trip is about 2h 45min, but we made it in only 5 hours!

We made a small side trip to see Blue Hole Springs--a small cave fed spring not too far from the canyon. The kids liked the little spring (though because of the drought the water didn't look as blue as it probably normally does--it did have more water than we expected) and Alex spent all his time finding rocks and sticks to throw into the spring from the little bridge.

We made it to the lodge about 7pm....tired and hungry. Luckily dinner was waiting for us! We claimed beds and got things unpacked.

The kids found an apple tree and had fun knocking down apples and gathering them to eat....

The lodge was great--it had a huge kitchen, a nice eating/gathering area and showers/ bathrooms. If we had brought more (any) camping chairs it would have been nicer--the most comfortable thing to sit on were metal folding chairs! The rooms had bunk beds so we pushed two beds together to help protect kids from falling on the hard tile floor (obviously this ended up not being enough protection) and allow one of us to contain sleep next to Alex on the bottom bunks.

After we got settled I went to bed with Alex and Carter--I could hear everyone having a good time out in the main room, but I was exhausted and couldn't make myself get out of bed!
