Speachless

I go to the YMCA almost every weekday. I do a weights class twice a week (for the most part) and do cardio the other days. I love the Y because I work out (which I need) and I get an hour or so break from being mom--the kids love the play classes (as we call them) and since we are there all the time the adults with the kids know my kids well.

Today I would normally have gone to my weights class, but I had a bunch of errands to do and I was still feeling a little sore from class on Monday so I decided to just go exercise for 40 minutes and then run my errands before picking Carter up from school.

I felt really happy as I dropped Alex off at his class because he ran right in and I heard a little girl say "Look! Alex is here!" I went and worked out--but after 30 minutes I was reaching my stopping point (I'm trying not to overdo it at this point in my pregnancy, because then I spend the rest of the day laying on the couch). So I worked out for 30 minutes, got some water, entered my workout time in the computer and went to pick up Alex. It had been just under 40 minutes since I left him.

The lady that checked him in was at the door and This is how our conversation went:

  • YMCA Person: "Are you picking him up already?"
  • Me: "yes, we are headed out now"
  • YMCA Person: "How long did you workout--it feels like you just dropped him off."
  • Me: "I worked out 30 minutes" (why is this your business?) "That was all I could do today"
  • YMCA Person: "Why did you even come if you weren't going to stay very long?" "Did you think about that?"
  • Me: "Umm...well, I figured 30 minutes was better than nothing" (what is going on here???)
  • YMCA Person: "Really, by the time you drove here, got ready and then leave--what was the point?"
  • Me: "Umm....ok...we will see you tomorrow"
She said all of this very nicely....but really I keep thinking--Are you telling me that unless I can dedicate an hour to exercise that it wasn't worth my time? And then I give her the benefit of the doubt that maybe time had just passed quickly and she didn't realize what time it was....and then I think--why did she say all of that???

Now I feel pressure to exercise more--are they talking about the parents in the playcenter--comparing how fit they are and how long they exercise? Does she not realize I'm pregnant and is trying to get me to lose a few pounds??? Why does it matter to her how long I stay--really, if I were her I would be happy when parents stayed a shorter time--less kids you have to take care of!

Moral of this story: The saying that goes "You wouldn't care what people thought of you, if you realized how little they did think about you" isn't always true!

Tomorrow.....One hour at the Y...maybe 1.5 hours! That will show her!

That's really wierd. And really stupid too. 30 minutes is an excellent work out, ESPECIALLY if you are pregnant!

Like you said, if I was her, I wouldn't be complaining about a mom picking her child up early!

You should have left him and gone to lunch - maybe then she would have been happy. Amazing that you go to the Y pregnant, I take those 10 months to stuff myself full of ice cream and bagels so I'll need the Y the rest of my life - it's job security for the Y employees :)
