Christmas day 2011

Christmas morning dawned bright and early...and I mean 4:45 am early.  Luckily it was just Carter and I think my exact words were something along the lines of "There is NO way we are getting up this early--do not wake me up again until at least 6:00"  But I can't be sure because I wasn't really awake.

6am came and I tried to put him off again, but this time he was smart and woke up Alex and Aaron before he came back in.  Caroline got up once she knew Matt and I were actually awake.
Despite a frequent flirtation with the Naughty list in December, the kids must have been good enough the rest of the year because Santa came and left presents!
waiting for the ok from dad
Caroline was kind enough to take pictures of everyone opening presents...unfortunately I forgot to take any of her.
Aaron had been telling EVERYONE for weeks that Santa was going to bring him a dump truck.  I guess Santa got the message because Aaron got a dump truck!
Santa always brings a book or two for the kids--Alex was excited to be able to read his this year.
Roxie opened her presents and then took a nap
After presents and our favorite Christmas morning breakfast we played with toys and took a nap then got ready for church.  I normally love having Christmas on a Sunday--so nice to go to church and listen to beautiful music and scriptures about the Savior's birth.  Unfortunately this year our family was singing one of the songs.

I will pause at this point to give those of you who know us well time to stop laughing at the thought of us singing in church.....

I'm really not sure how I got talked into agreeing to sing a song....I think person who asked us may have either been delusional or hadn't really heard us sing.  She told me that she couldn't find any families who would be in town on Christmas and would we please help her out--it was a primary song after all.

It would have been completely embarrassing for everyone involved, except I had credit for 4 voice lessons from Caroline and Carter's voice/piano teacher and I cashed them in to ensure that we didn't ruin everyone's Christmas with our singing.

If you know the level of musical talent in our ward you would understand my fear of total embarrassment--we have a number of professional musicians in the ward, yes, professional.  After you get past them, we have about 30 more people who are extremely talented musically.  Then you get to the youth and primary kids that are amazingly talented....you may be starting to get the idea of what I was up against!

The song "He Sent His Son" went fine, as Matt said--our goal was to sing well enough to not embarrass ourselves and not good enough to ever be asked again.  I think we accomplished both.  During the song Aaron stayed with my parents, Alex was trying to push the rest of us away from the microphone--and as we were all so close together, it was difficult for Caroline and I to keep our balance.  Carter, apparently, decided to help control Alex by putting him in a headlock during the song.

Of course people were nice and complimentary afterwards, the comments we got were something along the lines of "it was nice to see a regular family singing--you don't have to have a lot of talent to sing in sacrament meeting"....let's just say, it won't happen again!
With church over, we were happy to change and head over to my parents' house for dinner and presents!
There were lots of new toys to play with
Gavin won the award for most boring present--his mom had put diapers as the thing he most wanted...I'm guessing he will be happy to start talking and let people know what he really wants!
Shanna gave the boys shields and swords and mustaches!
Caroline loved her two scarves from Aunt Lisa--but together they may be a tad too puffy!
Ironically, there was a mistake again with the cousin gift exchange, but this time Aaron was without a present, and unfortunately Alex (who got two presents) was not as easily fooled into giving up one of his gifts.  Luckily Grandma had given every family a BYU football and that turned into Aaron's gift--he was more than happy to get a football for Christmas and the crisis was averted!
Sometimes, I'm not exactly sure what he is dressing up as!
